an outsider’s view on discourse in american politics

this will be just a brief one, not an actual analysis.

the political discourse in america is unbelievable. both parties attempt to brainwash the american voter by overflooding them with messages to a point where, quite frankly, i’d go insane and just start ignoring everything.

then there’s the fanatics on both sides. but, and that is not just me taking sides (i do support the liberal side obviously), republicans seem to be of lesser intelligence. i’ve observed this in countless blogs, comments on articles across all (right-wing to left-wing) media, i’ve watched debates on youtube, read the threads, and really took time to form an opinion - not about the candidates, but about their voters and supporters.

republican voters are absolutely immune to facts, everything gets blasted off like it’s a lie. if it’s not a lie, it’s a “rumor”. if it’s undeniably true, they’ll start talking about something completely different and throw the word “liberal” at you like it’s a bad thing. when did the meaning of that word get hijacked by the way?

to be fair, i like the idea of barack obama as a president of the us of a. in the end though, he won’t be so different. everything america does has an impact, especially on the (in my opinion often weak and opportunistic) UK. his job is to protect america’s interest, and he’ll do the same job as every one else before him did, maybe better, maybe not, maybe even worse. he’s more of a symbol than anything else. as much as a woman would have been a symbol.

and lastly, what i think really has taken all the fun out of politics is the zealots in the political parties, dragging down every attempt on constructive discourse into the gutter. what’s left, instead of debates about policies, is the repetitive shouting and screaming of messages and paroles and throwing dirt at each other’s head. and quite frankly, this is an insult to every thinking person participating with interest in this political race to the white house.
