Closing the digital divide - really?

Someone on Twitter posted a link to this article:

http://www.emarketer.com/Article.aspx?R=1007660

Essentially, it concludes that mobile phones help “less connected” and probably therefore “less advantaged” Teenagers close the digital gap to the “leading class” of predominantly white teenagers from privileged backgrounds.

Now, that’s a great thing as far as I’m concerned and I’m all for it, but the question remains, what is a mobile phone essentially good for other than making phone calls, texting and maybe some social networking? Does more black kids going online with their phones mean that “digital literacy”, learning the skills to use the internet and its vast amount of information and tools to improve knowledge and productivity is as accessible to them as it is with someone who can afford an internet connection and a computer?

Reading further, it states that “tapping this market” will be increasingly important for brand marketers to reach their audiences. Cold, man.

Well, does however makes perfect sense to mention this in an article considering it’s from emarketer.
